Safety glasses
rubber gloves, hearing protection, hard hat, respirator, chemical
resistant clothing are all examples of personal protective
equipment. The employer must have a written plan and conduct
hazard assessments to determine what type of safety gear is appropriate.
The hazard assessment puts logic into the
process. The MSDS sheets may suggest that to use a chemical
gloves, splash gear and apron must be worn. The hazard assessment
reviews the process in which it is used to determine if the hazard
exists. For example, window cleaner MSDS may suggest chemical
gloves, splash gear and apron be worn, but after careful evaluation of
the work area and process, as long as it is sprayed on a window and not
reversed towards the eye, the hazard assessment may only require
protective gloves.
Each process that uses a chemical must go through the
hazard assessment process.
PPE regulations also require that a written plan be
developed and implemented. Training on the proper types of PPE as
well as the proper wearing and removing of the equipment is required.
