MERCURY SPILLS

SCHOOLS should no longer be using mercury in the school/classroom.  This includes all equipment such as thermometers.

We are finding that even though the schools removed their mercury equipment a couple years ago, some schools have an occasional mercury equipment (usually thermometer) showing up.

We recommend that the importance of mercury equipment disposal be emphasized for several years to come to avoid an accident that several west Michigan schools have experienced.

We also recommend that schools keep a spill kit that is easily accessible on site so a quick response can be made.

QUICK REFERENCE FOR SPILLS
bulletIsolate area and people that may have come in contact. Prevent tracking across the school.
bulletDump sulfur flower on area (keeps vapors low)
bulletLower temperature in room/s
bulletDO NOT USE A BROOM!
